Albir – It is the coastal part of the town Alfaz del Pi, just a little way up the hill. Over the last 40 years it has grown into a little town of smart villas, apartments, shops, pubs, hotels and restaurants. For the residents, many of whom are retired, there are all the ancillary services of health centres, lawyers, estate agents, in fact everything that is needed to live a comfortable life in the sun or enjoy a holiday here.
Many nationalities live in happy association; English,Dutch- Netherlands, Norwegian, Swedish, Russian, Chinese. They have their own specialised restaurants, doctors, dentists and food shops. The town is laid out either side of the road that leads down to the sea and a beach which comprises a mix of pebbles and some sand. The sea is crystal clear and turquoise. In the summer season there are sunbeds for hire and pedalos, paddle boards and canoes. The mountain range, the Sierra Helada starts at the near end of the beach and stretches as far as Benidorm. Perched on top is a lighthouse and the walk there is popular with those who like to keep fit and enjoy the magnificent views around the coast as far as Calpe. For the culture vulture, there is a fine building on the seafront – the Fundacion, which hosts art exhibitions and musical concerts, and during the summer months there is a film festival on the beach. For others there is a vibrant café culture with sunny terraces to meet new friends and enjoy a drink or two. The Romans settled here more than 2000 years ago and archaeologists have unearthed the remains of a villa, which can now be viewed in a modern museum.
